The Durango Community
Situated in the heart of the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado, the community of Durango is one we are proud to call home!
Originally incorporated in the late 1800s by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Durango began as a true Old West mining town to service Silverton and nearby San Juan mountain mining communities. Since then, Durango has grown into a vibrant, active, and distinctive community.
With our high desert climate and ideal location, Durango is a gateway to both the mountains and desert. You can enjoy the best of Colorado’s mountain adventures (skiing, hiking, camping, rafting) or venture to nearby desert locations, all within a short drive. Additionally, Durango’s history and legacy continues with our bustling historic Main Avenue, where you’ll hear the whistle of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad from the doors of our chocolate cafe.
Animas Chocolate & Coffee Co. owes our success to this supportive and growing community! What was born on the banks of the Animas River has become a key cornerstone of Durango’s historic downtown. Our products are inspired by and influenced by the landscape surrounding Durango and its rich history, and we are proud to continue to give back to this community regularly.
The next time you visit Durango, we invite you to stop in to our downtown cafe, taste our Smelter Hot Chocolate (be sure to ask where it gets its name from!), and lose your soul to chocolate.
